Seriously. Do you know what you are doing?

I know that seems like an insulting question, but I’m not implying that you’re an idiot. What I mean is, do you have a plan that you are following? Do you know the next steps and the ones after that? Do you know what you should be doing next week or next month?

If you are like many people, you may have no idea about tomorrow, much less next week or next month! It’s nothing to be ashamed of. As long as you don’t let it continue. At some point everyone has had these moments of indecision, confusion or just a lack of clarity of purpose.

The simplest way to get past that not knowing is to take control of your day in the most basic way. What is that? Simple. It’s taking the time to write down what you are going to do before you do it.

How often do you take the time to plan out your day? Do you ever take 15 minutes to think about the things you NEED to do versus the things you WANT to do versus the things you MUST do versus the things OTHERS want you to do? Just taking the time to write down the top 5 or 6 things that are important and should be done?

Often when we need to make changes like this, it starts with exerting control over the things we CAN control. We don’t always have total control over our day and schedule, but where we do, we need to decide to do some specific tasks. You can start by deciding on just two things you need to do or want to do. Doesn’t matter if it’s at work, home or in your own business. Take the time or make the time to get some specific things done. Then repeat that again the next day. Maybe the next day you can do three or four things.

Build on what you have done, and soon you will be doing things purposefully and deliberately. This is something you can build on, because accomplishing things you set out to do reinforces the idea that you are a capable person, a doer. Soon you will find yourself thinking about the far future rather than just next week or next month. That’s when things will REALLY start happening.

Take care not confuse the urgent with the important. Just because it isn’t urgent, doesn’t mean it’s not important. The ringing phone isn’t important, but that ringing IS urgent. Is it urgent to create an action plan for ultimate success? No, probably not. But it is EXTREMELY important.

So, take that 15 minutes at the end of the day to plan out what you will do the next day and see where it takes you.
