I do my affirmations often to produce my “fresh reality”, my new version of “the truth.” I practice my future perfectly!

Let’s take a look at another affirmation. This one has some good things and some bad things. It’s not even one I think I would make slight modifications to use. From a philosophical standpoint, I have big issues with the middle. We don’t create our own version of “the truth.” Something that is true for everyone is True with a capital T. While your circumstances and ideas may work and be true for you, they aren’t necessarily true for others.

When you say you make a new version of “the truth” with those words in quotes, it sounds like you’re talking about truth that applies to all. It’s incredibly seductive to so that truth is something that we define. It’s seductive because it implies a level of control that we may not have. Gaining control when we don’t have it now is very attractive. It means you have a purpose where being out of control often means you don’t.

We also don’t create reality. Reality is what it is. It’s a fact of life. What we can do is change our circumstances and how we react to our immediate reality. We can work at changing things and affect reality, but we don’t produce a “fresh reality” that this affirmation seems to imply, especially one that is a new version of “the truth.”

Finally, the part about practicing our future perfectly seems to be a meaningless bit of tripe that is there to pump you up. Logically, you don’t practice the future. You live the present. You examine the past and prepare for the future. If you mean that whatever happens is exactly what you practiced perfectly, that is sort of true. What you get in the future is a result of all the decisions and especially actions that you make and take now.

Essentially, this affirmation seems to take the idea that we create our own reality and truth and that we are the sole masters and creators of what is real for us. In addition we can wish things into being because our affirmations produce our reality. That’s just not the case. Our decisions, actions and responses are what affect the world around us. What we believe and what we choose to do have far more to do with what happens to our future than any affirmation or wishing.

Getting to the future takes work. Affirmations can help create the right mindset to help you get to where you want to go, but you don’t get to choose your own truth or create your own reality along the way. Life doesn’t work that way. We have to work within the reality we have and deal with the things that are true. Our future is determined by those things, working in our reality and how we deal with the people and situations in that reality. We can choose to have a positive impact on both or we can try to wish something else into being.

Choose the first option. You’ll like your results a lot better.
